A little more about Joanna
Joanna received her M.S. in Clinical Psychology from Vanguard University and her B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Sociology from Concordia University, Irvine. She is currently a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT)/ Associate Professional Clinical Counselor(APCC) for adolescents at SoCal Adolescent Wellness in Lake Forest and Huntington Beach. She has worked with children, adolescents, couples, and families across cultures and socioeconomic levels. Her consistent focus is on providing an inclusive space that is Black, Indigenous, and People of Color/LGBTQ+/Neurodiversity/sex positive to also help foster a safer environment for one's inner child to reconnect with their adult selves. It is Joanna's highest value to be able to hold a safe, authentic, genuine, and non-judgmental environment for you to process through past hurtful experiences.
She has worked in various settings such as Community Mental Health, Residential Level of Care, Partial Hospitalization-Programs, and Intensive-Outpatient-Programs, and Out-Patient services with adolescents and adults. Joanna uses different therapeutic techniques, including cognitive behavioral therapy, person-centered therapy, psychodynamic, strengths based therapy, mindfulness, and therapeutic/experiential activities. The varying techniques and focus on psychodynamic is to process past experiences and traumas dating back to childhood strongly, as it influences the way we feel about ourselves and others. As well as Joanna wanting to explore transgenerational trauma and cultural experiences to also process the factors and impacts this has to our development and paradigm that may further emphasize the negative feedback one gives to themselves. Joanna will prompt you to explore your past and listen to repeating negative patterns. As a first generation latinx neurodivergent individual she has a passion to help individuals feel validated and understand to be able to connect to their most authentic selves. Joanna places collaboration as a foundation to provide a holistic approach to provide support as well. The self care that she plunges herself in is reading books, watching anime, enjoying hot yoga, road cycling, watching movies, cooking, loves humor, hikes, surfs, art, and enjoying a spectrum of food.
